Calcined Petroleum Coke

Calcined petroleum coke is an essential ingredient in the production of aluminium. It is created by rotary kiln heating premium raw petroleum coke, or “green” coke, to temperatures between 1200 and 1350 C. (2192 and 2460 F). The coke’s crystalline structure is altered by the high temperatures, which also extract any leftover hydrocarbons and remove excessive moisture to produce a denser, more electrically conductive final product. Calcined petroleum coke can be handled safely and carried to storage silos or loaded directly into shipping containers, trucks, railcars, barges, or vessels after cooling from 1350°C to less than 200°C in a matter of hours.

Calcined petroleum coke’s sponge-like structure makes it ideal for use in anodes. Aluminum smelters employ a block of carbon that solidifies into a binding substance to transport power into their melting pots through the pores of coke particles. For every 100 tonnes of aluminium produced, the anodes are thought to be consumed at a rate of roughly 40 tonnes of calcined petroleum coke. Calcined petroleum coke is the only substance that is now understood to be commercially feasible for the production and use of anodes for aluminium smelters.
